Camp for Free in Scotland with the Outdoor Access Code
"Scotland’s access legislation means that everyone can go camping wherever access rights apply, as long as it’s done responsibly"
- Scottish Outdoor Access Code
That’s right friends: wild camping is free and LEGAL in Scotland.
There aren’t many places in the world left like that, especially ones that are clean, safe, and exceptionally beautiful. If you’re planning a budget trip, or simply want to get remote on your next outing, look no further than Scotland. Here’s everything you need to know about the code before you go.
The Gist of things
It’s pretty much exactly as it sounds. You can camp - almost - everywhere for free in Scotland.
Indeed, this is especially meant to include private land. There’s some fishy stuff going on over there with large private (and often international) holdings. Scotland has made a commitment to keeping these lands open and accessible to the public. Of course this includes camping, but it also means that simple actions like walking across private land are guaranteed.
Common Exceptions
There are not many. And most of them are common sense.
The big one is that you can’t camp close to homes/buildings on people’s land. Basically, you have to stick outside ‘gardens.’ Of course that wording is a bit wishy washy, but it usually means outside of mowed lawns. You also have to avoid crops and livestock. Plus, school yards (makes sense).
However, you can walk through all these places if necessary.
What about Parks?
You CAN camp in most public parks. This is where you might get the most flac from people under the impression that you cannot. However, as long as your presence does not risk human or environmental safety, it is usually allowed on public land. Some national parks will have areas that are permit only. They should be marked.
In fact, we posted up in a tiny park in a tiny town one night when we rolled up late. The locals were quite friendly about our presence and generally bemused that we were there.
Respecting the environment
It’s important to respect the environment and locality while camping. In fact, you have to. That’s part of the deal. Things that are illegal or ill advised at other times are still both illegal and ill advised under the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.
Best Practices
Simple Leave No Trace principles should be followed while camping.
As a refresher, pack out all your trash and bury your human waste away from water sources. Keep small groups and disperse as much as possible. Fires are allowed, but don’t hurt trees and use a stove when possible.
Asserting your rights
We only had trouble one time with an angry landowner about the delineation of her ‘garden.’ And, after we talked to her, she still let us camp there. However, it is totally possible that people will try to challenge you when they feel that their land is being taken over by hippy hooligans. Know your rights (and responsibilities) before going in, and you have a better chance at success.
Not being an asshole
Self explanatory. Do not be the person to end this beautiful gift to the world. Be smart, and respectful.
